The Metro authorities are gearing up to install sound absorbents on the Salt Lake stretch of East-West Metro, which once operational, will run past schools, hospitals and residential areas.
The installation of sound absorbents will reduce noise levels considerably and ensure quieter train movements. The East-West Metro, also called Line-2, will link Salt Lake Sector V at one end, to Howrah Maidan at the other end, covering a stretch of 16.6km.
Like the north-south Metro, the East-West corridor is also set to create history in Indian civil engineering as it includes the country’s first under-water Metro project running below the river Hooghly.

The sound absorbents or sound barriers are being installed to reduce noise level at stretches where there are schools, hospitals and other public places. The officials of Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) have identified five points in and around schools, hospitals and similar places where the sound absorbents are supposed to be installed.
The absorbents, according to officials of KMRC, the implementing agency of Kolkata Metro, are panels made out of steel sheets with micro perforations on them. “The sheets have been imported from Taiwan and the installation work is to be started from next week,” informed a KMRC official. “The materials have been brought and the work outside the platforms will start soon. The sizes of the perforated panels vary from 1.5 to 2.5 metres and will be installed along the walkway side of the viaduct. Around five spots near two schools, two hospitals and one residential area have been located for installation of the sound absorbents.”
The installation, however, is a slow process as it involves work at elevated stretches of around 12 to 15 metres height. “It is expected that it will take two months to complete the installation work,” he added.
